"Microbial fouling of water lines in dental operatories has been described in both the United States and Europe since the first report more than 20 years ago. Microbial contamination of dental unit water appears widespread and extensive. Organisms populating the waterlines include many pathogenic potential or characteristics, but little work has been done on any relationship they may have to medical complications after dental care. However, the presence in dental waterlines of high numbers of those organisms, some of which probably originate from patient sources, needs to be addressed..."
